Tossing Out the CokeToday is day number 250 since I started this journey and gave up soda. This was the first step on my wellness journey and an important one in taking back control of my health. I don’t believe there is anything inherently wrong with soda, but it is an easy way to consume too many calories and too much added sugar.

Nutritional Impact

I counted up how many calories and added sugar my daily consumption of soda was adding to my diet. I was shocked to find out that my 4-6 cans of soda (or sweet tea) were adding more than 800 calories and 200 grams of added sugar every day. Giving up soda on day 1 was a symbolic step – one that was easy to measure and be held accountable to. In that first week, I lost almost 8 pounds.

Sugar

While soda was likely the biggest single contributor to added sugar in my diet, it was certainly not my only hangup. I still struggle with sugar cravings and even tried to do 5 days sugar-free. I don’t know if I will ever be able to completely give up added sugar, but I have made lots of small changes.

Alternatives

When I gave up soda, I also started drinking NingXia Red daily. I love this whole-body supplement and feel like I have much more energy each day. I also mix in essential oils with my water.
