Last Friday when I put myself out there I didn’t really know what to expect. I have never embraced the ‘share everything’ digital culture that has seemed to so inundate our world. I knew I needed to do something and I also knew that if I was public about it then I would have to follow through. What I didn’t expect was the outpouring of support I would receive. The number of people who have reached out to me has been amazing and I truly appreciate every one of you who read my post and liked or commented in some way. A few of you have shared your own stories with me and it is truly motivating, so thank you!
Two years ago my wife started using essential oils as part of our family wellness plan. Initially, I was a giant skeptic. I think I even called her a snake oil salesman (sorry honey). I was converted when I saw the benefits of the oils first hand. I started using Peppermint for afternoon head tension. Still, I didn’t use the oils on a regular basis until more recently. There were two specific things that happened recently that led me to believe that I could tackle this weight loss challenge:
- Stress. My wife gave me some Stress Away to take with me to work for the daily craziness and that really helped. One day when the daily grind was especially tough, my wife suggested I try some Frankincense rubbed on my neck, and again it helped me feel calmer. You see, one of my biggest problems with my diet was ‘stress eating’. When I would get stressed I would make very poor nutritional choices. With a different way to handle stress, I no longer needed to use food in that way.
- Snacking. Another big problem I personally faced was snacking. It was not uncommon for me to grab a large bag of chips and finish the entire bag while watching a football game. My wife introduced me to Ningxia Red. This anti-oxidant rich, whole body supplement is packed with great berries and oils. I also found that mixing in essential oils with this was much more palatable than with water, so I would add Grapefruit, Peppermint, and Lemon. With just an ounce of this, I found my sugar cravings diminished and that led to less snacking (plus it tastes great!) With a whole line of wellness supplements to explore, there were numerous options for me to address snacking.
With a solution on hand for stress and snacking, I felt like the hardest part of tackling weight loss was solved. During the last 3 days, I have had my ounce of Ningxia Red (with Grapefruit, Peppermint, and/or Lemon) twice a day.
In addition to addressing stress and snacking, I know I will need to do more. One thing I will need to do is to start exercising regularly. This weekend I got outside and cut up a tree that had fallen during Hurricane Matthew. I spent about 4 hours on Sat sawing up the fallen tree and lugging it up a hill to my wood pile. I spent another 3 hours on Sunday with an ax splitting it all up. In the end, I had a cord of wood for free, removed the fallen tree for free, and got some exercise for free. Not a bad deal!
I need to come up with a regular exercise routine, and there are several options I am exploring. I have access to an excellent gym at work, a great YMCA near my home, my wife recently started CrossFit, and I have a great cardio boxing workout that I love and just haven’t done in a while. I’m going to create a page for My Plan with these points and update it over time as I learn more.
